Two Companies, One National Gas Network
Pakistan's piped natural gas is distributed by two state-controlled utilities that split the country geographically: Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) in the north and Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC) in the south. They do not overlap — every gas consumer belongs to exactly one of them, determined by location. Knowing which company serves you is the first step to correctly checking your gas bill online.
The simplest way to tell them apart is your city. If you live in Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Peshawar, or anywhere in Punjab, KPK, AJK, or Gilgit-Baltistan, you are an SNGPL consumer — check your bill on the SNGPL page. If you live in Karachi, Hyderabad, or anywhere in Sindh or Balochistan, you are an SSGC customer — check your bill on the SSGC page.
The second quick check is your consumer number's length. SNGPL uses an 11-digit Account ID, while SSGC uses a 10-digit customer number. If you have an old bill or a saved copy, count the digits and you will instantly know which utility you belong to. Our duplicate bill guide shows how to recover the number if you have misplaced every bill.
Crucially, both companies bill under the same OGRA-approved domestic tariff, so your per-unit rates, slab structure, fixed charges, and 18% GST are identical regardless of provider. The differences between SNGPL and SSGC are about geography, contact channels, and portals — not about how much gas costs. For the tariff itself, see our OGRA gas tariff guide.
Coverage: Which Company Serves Your Region
SNGPL is the larger of the two by geography and consumer count, covering the entire northern half of the country. Its territory spans Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Islamabad Capital Territory, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Major cities on the SNGPL network include Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Multan, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Peshawar, and Abbottabad. If any of these is your city, use the SNGPL bill check.
SSGC covers the two southern provinces — Sindh and Balochistan — with Karachi as its largest and most important service area. Other SSGC cities include Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Quetta, along with towns across interior Sindh and Balochistan. SSGC's network operates in a very different climate and demographic context from SNGPL's, but the billing framework is shared. Karachi residents should use the SSGC bill check.
The dividing line follows provincial boundaries almost exactly: the north (Punjab, KPK, ICT, AJK, GB) is SNGPL, and the south (Sindh, Balochistan) is SSGC. There is effectively no consumer who could be served by either — your address determines your provider unambiguously. This is why entering an SNGPL number on the SSGC portal (or vice versa) simply returns no result.
If you have recently moved between provinces — say from Karachi to Lahore — remember that your gas provider changes with your address, and you will need a new connection under the new utility rather than a transfer of your old account. Our new connection guide explains how to apply, and the SNGPL and SSGC guides cover each company's process in detail.
| Region | Province / Territory | Gas Company |
|---|---|---|
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan | Punjab | SNGPL |
| Peshawar, Abbottabad, Mardan | KPK | SNGPL |
| Islamabad, Rawalpindi | ICT / Punjab | SNGPL |
| Muzaffarabad, Mirpur | AJK | SNGPL |
| Gilgit, Skardu | Gilgit-Baltistan | SNGPL |
| Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur | Sindh | SSGC |
| Quetta and Balochistan towns | Balochistan | SSGC |
Consumer Number: 11 Digits vs 10 Digits
The most practical everyday difference is the consumer number format. SNGPL issues an 11-digit Account ID, printed in the top-left of the bill and labelled 'Account ID' or 'Consumer No.' SSGC issues a 10-digit customer number in a similar position. This single digit of difference is why the two portals and payment flows keep the providers separate — you must enter the right length for the right company.
When you pay through a mobile wallet or bank app, the app asks you to pick SNGPL or SSGC first, then enter the matching number. Choosing the wrong provider or mistyping a digit returns 'bill not found' or, worse, fetches a different account. Always verify the fetched name and amount against your own bill before paying, as explained in our payment methods guide.
Both numbers are permanent — they never change even if you update your contact details, replace your meter, or switch tariff category. Keep a photo of your bill in your phone so the number is always to hand for a quick online bill check or a payment. If you have lost every bill, our duplicate bill guide covers how to recover the number from each utility.
For consumers who prefer checking by phone rather than a website, SNGPL also offers an SMS bill service: send your 11-digit number to 9879 to receive your bill by text. SSGC consumers rely mainly on the online portal and the 1199 helpline. Our guide on checking your bill from a mobile phone covers both approaches.
Helplines and Contact Channels
The two companies run separate helplines, and dialling the right one saves time. SNGPL's central helpline is 111-762-762, available 24 hours a day for billing queries, complaints, meter issues, supply outages, and gas emergencies. SSGC's helpline is the short code 1199, also available around the clock for the same range of services. Our complaint and helpline guide walks through using each effectively.
For billing complaints, always call your own provider's number with your consumer number ready. An SNGPL consumer calling 1199, or an SSGC consumer calling 111-762-762, will simply be redirected — the systems are separate. Knowing your provider (from your city or number length) ensures you reach the right desk the first time and can log a complaint reference number.
Both companies also maintain regional and area offices for in-person matters like new connections, meter accuracy tests, and formal written complaints. SNGPL's head office is at 21-A Circular Road, Lahore; SSGC is headquartered in Karachi. For issues neither the helpline nor the regional office resolves, both providers fall under the same regulator, OGRA, to which you can escalate — see our overcharge dispute guide.
In a gas emergency — a suspected leak or gas smell — call your provider's helpline immediately (111-762-762 for SNGPL, 1199 for SSGC), do not operate electrical switches, and ventilate the area. Emergency response is a priority service on both networks and never closes. Our gas safety guide covers the exact steps to take during a leak.
Online Portals and Bill-Check Methods
Each company runs its own official website: SNGPL at sngpl.com.pk and SSGC at ssgc.com.pk. Both offer an online bill-inquiry tool where you enter your consumer number to view the current bill, amount due, and due date. The layouts differ slightly, but the function is the same. On our site, you can check an SNGPL bill or check an SSGC bill without navigating either portal directly.
SNGPL additionally supports the SMS service (number to 9879), giving northern consumers a no-internet way to check bills — handy in areas with patchy connectivity. SSGC customers typically use the online portal or helpline. Whichever method you use, the figure you see is the same one that mobile wallets and bank apps fetch when you pay.
Both portals can occasionally slow down in the first week after bills are dispatched, when millions of consumers check at once. If a portal is unresponsive, try again later, use the SMS option (SNGPL), or call the helpline. Our guide to checking your bill online covers what to do when a portal returns an error or no result.
For understanding the bill once you have retrieved it, the fields are essentially the same across both companies: consumer number, meter readings, gas charge by slab, fixed charge, GST, arrears, and due date. Our how-to-read-your-bill guide explains every line, and applies equally to SNGPL and SSGC bills.
Tariffs: Identical Rates, Same Regulator
A common misconception is that one company is cheaper than the other. In reality, both SNGPL and SSGC bill domestic consumers under the same nationally uniform tariff schedule set by OGRA, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority. The slab rates, fixed charges, and GST are identical whether you are in Lahore or Karachi. Any difference in your bill versus a friend's comes from consumption and category, not the company.
The domestic tariff distinguishes protected consumers — households whose winter (Nov–Feb) average is at most 0.9 hm³ (90 m³) per month — from non-protected consumers, applying lower slab rates and a Rs 600 fixed charge to the former. This protected/non-protected distinction is the same on both networks. You can verify your own status with our protected status checker.
OGRA revises tariffs periodically through gazette notifications, and both companies apply the revisions simultaneously. The rates effective from 1 July 2025 were left unchanged by OGRA's November 2025 determination for domestic consumers. Because figures are OGRA-set and revisable, always treat published rates as indicative and rely on your official bill for the authoritative amount. Our tariff slab guide lists the current bands.
To estimate what a given level of consumption costs under either company, use our Sui Gas bill calculator — the same estimate applies to SNGPL and SSGC because the tariff is shared. The calculator is a useful way to sanity-check a bill before deciding whether it warrants an overcharge dispute.
| Factor | SNGPL | SSGC |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Punjab, KPK, ICT, AJK, GB | Sindh, Balochistan |
| Consumer number | 11 digits | 10 digits |
| Helpline | 111-762-762 | 1199 |
| SMS bill service | Send number to 9879 | Portal / helpline |
| Head office | Lahore | Karachi |
| Tariff & regulator | OGRA (same rates) | OGRA (same rates) |
New Connections and Account Services
Both companies follow a similar new-connection process: submit an application with your CNIC and property documents, undergo a site survey, receive a Demand Notice for charges, pay it, and then have the service pipe and meter installed. The forms, offices, and exact charges differ between SNGPL and SSGC, but the steps are broadly the same — our new connection guide covers both.
Account services such as meter replacement, meter accuracy testing, load enhancement, name/ownership transfer, and voluntary disconnection or reconnection are offered by both utilities through their regional offices and helplines. If you are moving into a property, verify the connection is in a clear standing and consider transferring it into your name to avoid inheriting someone else's arrears or disputes.
One practical difference worth noting: because SNGPL covers colder northern regions, winter demand management and gas-pressure issues feature more prominently in its service area, while SSGC's Karachi-centric network deals with different load patterns. Both, however, handle the same core services. For meter-related questions common to both, see our meter reading guide.
If you are unsure which company to approach for a new connection, your address decides it — northern addresses apply to SNGPL, southern addresses to SSGC. Availability of new domestic connections can be restricted by policy at times, so confirm current status with your provider's helpline before applying.
Which Company Am I With? A Quick Decision Guide
If you are still unsure, run through this quick sequence. Step one: look at your city or province. North (Punjab, KPK, ICT, AJK, GB) means SNGPL; south (Sindh, Balochistan) means SSGC. For the overwhelming majority of consumers, this single step gives the answer with certainty.
Step two: confirm with your consumer number length. Eleven digits confirms SNGPL; ten digits confirms SSGC. If your city and your number length agree — as they always should — you have your answer. If you cannot find any bill, recover the number using our duplicate bill guide and then count the digits.
Step three: verify by attempting a bill check. Enter your number on the matching page — SNGPL here or SSGC here. A correct match returns your name, address, and current bill; a wrong provider or number returns nothing. This is the definitive confirmation that you are using the right company's channel.
Once you know your provider, bookmark the relevant guide — the SNGPL bill check guide or the SSGC bill check guide — for future reference on bills, payments, and complaints specific to your utility. Everything else, from tariff to safety, is shared between the two.
- 1Check your city/province — north = SNGPL, south = SSGC
- 2Confirm with number length — 11 digits SNGPL, 10 digits SSGC
- 3Verify by checking your bill on the matching page
- 4Bookmark your provider's guide — SNGPL or SSGC
Common Myths About SNGPL and SSGC
Myth one: 'One company charges less than the other.' False — both bill under the identical OGRA domestic tariff, so gas costs the same per unit nationwide. Any bill difference reflects your consumption and protected/non-protected status, not your provider. Use the calculator to see how consumption, not company, drives the total.
Myth two: 'I can transfer my account when I move provinces.' False — because the utilities are separate, moving from an SSGC area to an SNGPL area (or vice versa) requires a fresh connection under the new company, not a transfer. Our new connection guide explains how to apply in the new region.
Myth three: 'The SNGPL SMS number works for SSGC too.' False — the SMS bill service (send number to 9879) is an SNGPL feature. SSGC customers should use the online SSGC bill check or call 1199. Mixing up the channels simply returns no result. Our mobile bill-check guide clarifies which method works for whom.
Myth four: 'Both helplines reach the same call centre.' False — 111-762-762 (SNGPL) and 1199 (SSGC) are entirely separate. Always call your own provider with your consumer number ready to log a complaint or emergency correctly, as described in our complaint and helpline guide.
Conclusion: Same Gas, Same Rules, Different Territory
SNGPL and SSGC are two halves of one national gas-distribution system. SNGPL serves the north with 11-digit numbers and the 111-762-762 helpline; SSGC serves the south with 10-digit numbers and the 1199 helpline. Beyond geography, contact channels, and portals, they are remarkably alike — same regulator, same tariff, same core services.
For any consumer, the practical takeaways are simple: identify your provider from your city and number length, use the matching SNGPL or SSGC channels, and remember that your bill amount depends on your usage and tariff category, not on which company you belong to.
From there, the rest of our library applies to you regardless of provider: how to read your bill, the OGRA tariff, payment methods, and gas safety. Bookmark the guides relevant to your utility and you will always know exactly what to do.
